Tried. Tested. Proven. Ready to Impact Lives.
AvantGuard™ can turn any surface into an antimicrobial surface by holding chlorine from store-bought disinfectants on surfaces for as long as a month. AvantGuard has expertise in two relatively new chemistries that are the basis for our products.
N-halamine Chemistry for Antimicrobial Efficacy
The first, and arguably most important chemistry, is the antimicrobial chemistry of N-halamine. Under development at Auburn University for the last 30 years, N-halamine represents the first new antimicrobial chemistry in a century. Even so, N-halamine is not a new way to kill pathogens because the molecule relies on one of the world’s most effective biocides, chlorine. We have used chlorine for hundreds of years in our drinking water, our pools, our laundry and our cleaners and disinfectants. The N-halamine molecule covalently bonds to chlorine, holding the chorine on the surface to protect the surface from dangerous pathogens.
Covalently bonds to chlorine
Preferentially kills pathogens
Can be re-chlorinated
Stabilizes chlorine in a dry environment
Zwitterion Chemistry for Anti-Fouling Efficacy
A zwitterion is a molecule that has at least two functional groups: one having a positive charge and the other having a negative charge, with an overall charge of zero. Zwitterions interact with water molecules and essentially form a water barrier that makes it hard for proteins to stick to a surface. Zwitterion chemistry has allowed Cornell researchers to demonstrate that an implanted device can evade the human body’s immune system for several months. Cornell University is one of the leaders in employing zwitterion technology.
Forms water barrier
Retards accumulation of proteins and pathogens

Added Functions & Benefits
And we're just skimming the surface of what's possible.
Our other proprietary monomers introduce other functions and benefits, such as surface adhesion to make a coating, anti-adhesion properties to make surfaces easier to clean or resist biofilms, and anti-inflammatory properties for wound dressings.
AvantGuard has combined our N-halamine technology with a surface adhesion monomer to create our first product, AvantGuard247. AvantGuard247 is a spray-on chlorine extending residual antimicrobial coating that provides weeks of protection.
AvantGuard technology can be added to your coating formulation to create a permanent finish that can be chlorinated on a regular basis, creating a residual antimicrobial surface that not only kills pathogens but can make the surfaces easier to clean.
AvantGuard technology is compatible with a wide range of plastics and can be directly incorporated to make almost any plastic object or surface antimicrobial. Our zwitterion technology protects against the formation of dangerous biofilms.
